The Roots:

Kemscrima-Doh

Following the two prototype systems of Chi-Fi Kempo-Karate (CIRCA: 1967) and Tamaraw Kempo-Kuntao-Escrima (CIRCA:1970), Karaan-Sifu Glenn C. Abrescy developed the art of Kemscrima-Doh in 1985. While Kemscrima-Doh is influenced by many arts, its three main components are Chinese Kempo, Filipino Escrima, and Indonesian Kuntao.

The term "Kemscrima-Doh," was originally coined by Manuel O. Canalita, cousin to Sifu Abrescy. When derived, the term "KEM" refers to the empty hand principles of: Kempo, Chuan-Fa, Kajukenbo Kempo/Gung-Fu, Imua Kuntao-Silat, and Karate. "SCRIMA," represents the weapon and bladed arts of: Escrima, Kali, Arnis, Okinawan Kobudo, Stick Arts, and Trapping Hand Techniques. Meanwhile, "DOH," is the Taoist term for "The Way" or "Universal Order and Enlightenment." Together, KEM-SCRIMA-DOH translates to "The Way of the Stick and Fist."

Kemscrima-Doh is considered to be a hybrid art that features an eclectic blend of three main principles. The footwork principles found in Kuntao, the flowing principles of Escrima, and the destructive principles of Karate-Kempo compliment one another to form the distinct flavor found in the practice of the art. While the Escrima and the Kempo compliment one another, the Kuntao serves as a catalyst in blending the three arts.

Throughout the years it has been stressed that Kemscrima-Doh was and still is a "concept." While conceptual principles are taught in practice, it is up to the practitioner to interpret and connect the system to one's self. Thus, the three stages of Kemscrima-Doh are learning fundamentals, refining through repetition, and connecting through intuition.

While Kemscrima-Doh has spread over the past 25 years, it continues its development through the evolving theories, techniques, and principles. While we take the future of Kemscrima-Doh into consideration, it is equally important to recognize its heritage and roots. While many key role players have made contributions to KSD in one way or another, current members realize their responsibility of maintaining and spreading the art of Kemscrima-Doh.

History: Components of KSD

Below you can learn more about the heritage of the system, from the Circle of Influence to the KSD Family Tree. While the tree and its many branches outline the generations of Blackbelt Descendants Sifu Abrescy has promoted over the years, the Circle of Influence charts the many instructors who have played an influential role during Sifu Abrescy's martial arts career.

Since the systems inception 25 years ago, the "Kemscrima-Doh Coat of Arms" has served as a staple of the organization. Worn proudly on the backs of students for years, here you can find out more about the key components of its makeup. From the deadly iron triangle, to the Tamaraw bull, the Coat of Arms is recognized by many - both KSD practitioners and other stylists alike.

Kemscrima-Doh would not be where it is today without recognizing key individuals such as Pete Padron, Maximillano "Jimmy" Diaz, and Manuel Canalita. While Pete Padron served as Sifu Abrescy's top protege, Jimmy Diaz takes Kemscrima-Doh International with representatives in the United States and Mexico. Lastly, Manuel Canalita helped spearhead the transition from Tamaraw to Kemscrima-Doh in 1985. These KSD Key Role Players contributions to the system should always be recognized.
